Key Highlights of Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife destinations, especially renowned for its large population of Asian elephants. Located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in the southern part of the country, the park spans approximately 30,821 hectares (119 square miles) and was established in 1972 to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir.

Elephant Watching

Home to over 600 elephants, the park offers one of the best opportunities in Asia to see wild elephants at close range.

Elephants can be seen bathing, feeding, and moving in herds, especially around the Udawalawe Reservoir.

Wildlife Diversity

While elephants are the stars of the park, Udawalawe also hosts:
Leopards (though sightings are rare) Spotted deer, Sambar deer,Water buffalo, Crocodiles,,Mongoose & Jackals

Birdwatching Paradise

The park is a hotspot for both migratory and endemic birds, making it a favorite among birdwatchers.
Species include hornbills, bee-eaters, kingfishers, and various waders.

Scenic Landscapes

Features a mix of grasslands, marshes, forests, and the large Udawalawe Reservoir, creating beautiful scenery and good photo opportunities.

Reptiles & Amphibians: Crocodiles, monitor lizards, and various snake species can also be seen.

At the heart of the park lies the Udawalawe Reservoir, a vast artificial lake created by the Udawalawe Dam on the Walawe River. This reservoir is not only crucial for irrigation and water supply, but also plays a vital role in the park’s ecosystem. It attracts elephants, deer, water buffalo, and numerous bird species, especially during the dry season when water sources elsewhere dry up.

Together, the park and the reservoir offer a perfect blend of wildlife adventure and scenic tranquility, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers in Sri Lanka.
